Reported by Shams Charania and Ramona Shelbourne, the Boston Celtics have been sold. The Celtics have sold to the American businessman who is the Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of Symphony Technology Group, Bill Chisolm. Chisolm is now the successor to the previous owners, the Grousbeck Family.
The Grousbeck era was a success. They purchased the team for $360M in 2002 and now flipping it for a $5.74B profit. It was one of the most crucial sales in NBA history — but a great one. During this era the Celtics have achieved many great things, such as:
- Acquiring a big three (Pierce, Garnett, Allen) and winning 08 Finals
- Winning the 2024 NBA championship led by their draftees, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown
- Six ECF appearances in nine seasons
Although the deal has not officially been closed, Chisolm will take official ownership and action as soon as possible. Wyc Grousbeck will still be the team’s alternate governor and CEO but the leadership is in Chisolm’s hands.
Chisolm does not have the traditional background of any sports team owner. He lacks experience in sports management. But he is a lifelong Boston fan and that is what led him to buy the team. In interviews, he mentioned emotional connection to the city of Boston. He understands what the city and team is about and he plans to deliver on those expectations.
